The Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) is one of the defining features of every certified Cirrus aircraft. With over 100 documented deployments and more than 250 lives saved, CAPS has proven its value as a last-resort safety system. But like any life-saving equipment, the system is only effective if it is properly maintained on schedule.
For Cirrus owners, that means understanding the CAPS overhaul and replacement requirements, knowing when your components are due, budgeting for the costs, and choosing a qualified Cirrus service center to perform the work. This guide covers everything you need to know so you can plan ahead and keep your aircraft safe, airworthy, and compliant.
What Is the CAPS System?
CAPS is a whole-airframe ballistic parachute system designed to bring the entire aircraft and its occupants safely to the ground in an emergency. The system consists of three primary components: a parachute canopy housed in the fuselage behind the rear seats, a solid-propellant rocket motor that deploys the canopy, and reefing line cutters that allow the parachute to fully inflate after deployment.
When the pilot pulls the activation handle, the rocket motor fires through the top of the fuselage, extracting the canopy. The line cutters then fire on a timed delay to allow full inflation, and the aircraft descends at a controlled rate. The system is standard on every SR20, SR22, and SR22T.
CAPS Replacement Timeline and Requirements
The CAPS overhaul is not optional. The parachute canopy and rocket motor each carry a 10-year service life from their date of manufacture. Once either component reaches that mark, the aircraft is unairworthy under FAA regulations until the overhaul is completed. There are no ferry permits and no exceptions.
One detail that catches owners off guard is that the parachute and rocket motor do not necessarily expire at the same time. Each component’s clock starts from its individual manufacture date, and those dates can be weeks or months apart. Expiration dates are recorded in the Life Limited Components section of the original airframe logbook and on the components themselves.
In addition to the 10-year overhaul, the reefing line cutters must be replaced every six years. This is a separate interval that must be tracked independently. Line cutters are not included in the standard overhaul kit because their six-year life does not align with the 10-year parachute and rocket cycle.
Some early-generation aircraft, specifically certain SR20 serial numbers between 1005 and 1421 and SR22 serial numbers between 0002 and 0821, are eligible for an 11-year replacement interval on specific part numbers. Owners should verify eligibility with their Cirrus service center.
What the CAPS Overhaul Involves
A CAPS overhaul is not a standard A&P maintenance task. It requires Cirrus factory-trained technicians, an ATF license to handle the solid-propellant rocket motor, proper explosive storage facilities, and composite repair expertise. Heritage Aviation is fully certified to support all generations of Cirrus aircraft CAPS work.
On Gen 1 aircraft, the process begins with removing the CAPS access cover, which is bonded into the composite fuselage. The technician removes the expired rocket motor and parachute canopy, then installs a new or overhauled motor and freshly packed canopy. Line cutters are replaced if due or approaching their six-year interval. The CAPS wiring is tested for proper continuity and function, and the fuselage access cover is re-bonded and finished to restore structural integrity and cosmetic appearance.
The process is much the same on Gen 2 and subsequent Cirrus aircraft, except much simpler. For Gen 2 and on, the CAPS can be replaced through an access panel in the baggage compartment. This means that costly composite and paint work is not required on newer aircraft.
On Gen 2 aircraft and newer, the process takes 15-30 hours to replace. First-generation (G1) aircraft cost is higher as a result of the requisite composite and paint work. Most shops complete the work in two to five days, though parts availability can extend the timeline.
How Much Does a CAPS Overhaul Cost?
The CAPS overhaul is one of the most significant scheduled expenses in Cirrus ownership. Owners should plan for a total cost of roughly $15,000 to $22,000 depending on parts selection and labor rates.
The overhauled parachute and rocket motor kit typically runs $9,000 to $19,000. Most owners opt for the overhauled kit, which satisfies the 10-year requirement at a lower price point. A brand-new kit costs approximately $15,000 or more. Labor for removal and installation adds $2,000 to $3,000 for G2 and later aircraft, with G1 aircraft cost being higher.
For owners shopping for a used Cirrus, CAPS status should be a key factor in the purchase decision. An aircraft approaching its 10-year overhaul represents a significant near-term expense that should be reflected in the negotiated price.
Insurance companies are also increasingly strict about CAPS currency. Some carriers will not provide coverage on aircraft with overdue components, which means a lapsed overhaul does not just ground your aircraft. It can void your insurance as well.
Heritage Aviation: Cirrus Platinum Partner in Vermont
Heritage Aviation is a Cirrus Authorized Service Center with the training, licensing, and experience to handle every aspect of the CAPS overhaul process. Located at Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport, the facility provides comprehensive Cirrus maintenance from routine annuals to CAPS overhauls, rocket motor replacements, and line cutter services.
Heritage Aviation’s technicians are Cirrus factory-trained and certified for CAPS maintenance. The facility holds the required ATF licensing and storage capabilities, and the team has extensive composite repair experience on Cirrus airframes. All SR20, SR22, and SR22T models are supported.
Beyond CAPS, Heritage Aviation provides full avionics services for Cirrus aircraft, including Teledyne Continental engine support, AD and Service Bulletin compliance, warranty claims, and avionics upgrades. Owners can combine a CAPS overhaul with other scheduled maintenance in a single visit, reducing downtime and eliminating trips to multiple shops.
As a 100% employee-owned company, Heritage Aviation brings personal accountability to every job. Every technician is a shareholder, which means the quality of work on your aircraft directly impacts their livelihood. Vermont’s no-sales-tax policy on aircraft parts and labor also provides a meaningful cost advantage. On a $15,000 to $22,000 CAPS overhaul, the tax savings compared to states with 6% to 8% sales tax rates can be substantial.
Planning Ahead for Your CAPS Overhaul
Verify your dates now. Check the Life Limited Components section in your airframe logbook and confirm the manufacture dates for your parachute, rocket motor, and line cutters. Track all three independently.
Book early. Qualified CAPS service centers stay busy. Scheduling three to six months in advance gives you the best chance of completing the work before your expiration date.
Combine service events. If your annual inspection or other maintenance is due near your CAPS overhaul, consider combining them into a single visit at Heritage Aviation to save time and reduce total labor costs.
Budget accordingly. Setting aside $1,500 to $2,000 per year from the time of your last overhaul ensures funds are available when the next one comes due.
Don’t forget the six-year line cutters. The line cutter replacement falls outside the 10-year cycle and is easy to overlook. If it falls close to your overhaul, combine both services. If it lands mid-cycle, plan for it as a separate event.
